Evening everyone, well had total knee replacement Wednesday teatime, I had a spinal block and was initially terrified but if anyone is waiting for this procedure please relax, I found it fantastic, to be aware of what they were doing and talking to the surgeon during was reassuring, and you are fully concious when you return to your family which is aigret relief for them, I wad allowed home Friday afternoon and was told I was the quickest discharge following this procedure on there record. Bruising coming out today thou inner thigh, I will keep you all informed.

Wow I am impressed. I had my total knee replacement on 14th January this year. I had a spinal block and general anaesthetic and I was in hospital for four nights.

The best advice I can give you is when you get the o.k. keep doing all your physio exercises as much as you can. I had my operation privately and then saw a physio privately. When I went back to see my Consultant post op at 8 weeks he was horrified at how poorly I was walking. My phsyio had not done his job properly and had not put me onto the exercises he should have. I moved over to a new physio three weeks ago, bought an exercise bike, and the difference in three weeks is remarkable. I am walking better, however I can still only do the stairs one at a time. I need my other knee doing at some point but I am going to have to wait a while to get back to better mobility.

Hello girls
It's great to hear of your good progress after TKR. Everyone is different, but as long as the end r esult is good that all that matters.

I also had my right knee replaced 2 weeks ago. It was done on the Thursday and surgeon said he aimed for home on Saturday. The anaesthetist tried an epidural but due to my funny spinal canal he couldnt do it, so just proceeded with the general planned.

The surgeon does an 'enhanced recovery programme' where, in my case, 1.5 hours after returning from theatre recovery, the physios arrived and got me walking round the room! I was so dopey I would have done anything. Theory is that the new knee doesnt stiffen up and so far so good. I had very low blood pressure so the Saturday home was coming was out, but I finally made it on the Sunday evening.

Physio said that my movement at 3 days was as good as they would hope for at 6 weeks, so hoping that this will continue. Few problems with very low HB etc, purple b ruising from thigh to heel, but the knee is very good.

Our friend who is a retired ortho surgeon said his patients used to be in hospital for 2 weeks after TKR. Progress eh?!!

Thanks for the replies, I am currently waititng for the district nurse, she should have called yesterday. I can not belief the amount of bruising it causes there is no wonder it hurts like well!, I convinced myself I had DVT, Just booked a holiday to Rome in the summer, so something nice to look forward to, will keep you all informed of my progress

Hi Joe,

You certainly have done really well, hope you go from strength to strength. The exercise bike is a great idea my dad had the best knee joint going the surgeon said on seeing how well he could bend his knee. He started off slowly and built up until he was doing 1-over 100 repetitions.

hi Joe,

so pleased everything went well for you, and re-assuring to know you had it done by spinal block.

both my knee's are shot to pieces ( i have had Osteo in them for about 5 years now ) and when i feel able will have to have them done. i want to opt for the spinal block as well.

wishing you a good recovery and take it slowly.

Well, started off great and now in constant pain in my left hip, not sure if the abuse your hip takes thru the knee replacement op but my hip is more painful than the knee replacement, was hoping to discuss with the district nurse but she never came, apparently a mix up at the hospital, so my husband has been playing nurse! changing my dressings, going to see the physio this afternoon so maybe they will help, I will keep you all informed and once again many thanks for your replies x

The pain in your hip could be from several things. You could be compensating with your hip when walking so moving different muscles than normal. This is what is happening to me so I sympathise. It could also be referred pain from your knee going into your hip or it could have been from the operation when they move you around all sorts of positions. You need to get it checked out just to be on the safe side.
